Lamp Replacement
FSG successfully completed an energy saving project for one our retail clients. Our primary goals were to reduce site energy consumption and prolong lamp life with minimum disruption to service at site. The secondary benefits were to reduce energy costs and lower the heat output of the lighting (avoiding unnecessary draw on HVAC system.)

- Property Type: Restaurant
- No. of Lamps: 73
- Technology used: Multiple Type Reduced Watt Retro Fit RC
- Lamps by Osram
- Energy Measurement: Smart Metre installed at site
Key Objectives
- Energy Reduction
- No Compromise to Luminescence
- Longer Lamp Life
- Payback Within First Financial Year
- Heat Output Reduction
- No Disruption to Service
Key Results
- Lamp Wattage Reduced by avg 15w/19% Energy Saving
- IRC Technology led to no loss of Luminescence
- Increased lifespan of each lamp by 1000 hours (33%)
- Energy Costs reduction run rate for year one £667.23
- 8 Month Full Payback (includes install)
- 30% Lamp Heat Reduction
- Re-fit Carried out in-hours prior to Customer opening
Ecubes
FSG also sought to reduce our clients energy bills by looking into solutions for equipment that is in constant use and where the biggest reductions could be made. The installation of the Ecubes in the refrigeration units on site can be completed in a very cost and time efficient manner and the results can be seen instantly with no changes to the temperature and functionality of the refrigeration unit.
- Client: Gondola
- Site: Pizza Express, Baker Street
- Property Type: Restaurant
- No. of refrigeration units: 1 x cold room, 1 x walk-in freezer
- Technology used: E-Cube
- Energy Measurement: Kw meter readings
Key Objectives
- Energy Reduction
- No Compromise to Refrigeration levels
- Fast Pay Back Period
- No Disruption to Service
Key Results
- Sample week without Ecube fitted: 147.69Kw used
- Week with the Ecube fitted: 81.52Kw used
- First week savings 66.17Kw = £5.29
- Yearly saving based on 52 weeks 3,440.84Kw = £275.26 (Based on 1Kw = £0.08 )
Oven Timers
Another project we undertook was to reduce the amount of energy used by the pizza ovens. This project entailed timers being install at the restaurant which controlled when the ovens were able to be switched on. By reducing the amount of time the ovens are on by 2 hours a day we were able to cut the energy bills by £12.91 per week.
- Client: Gondola
- Site: Pizza Express, Baker Street
- Property Type: Restaurant
- Equipment Type: Oven
- Technology used: Timing Unit
Key Objectives
- Energy Reduction
- Fast Pay Back Period
- No Disruption to Service
- Less draw on HVAC as oven on-time reduced
Key Results
- 1 week without the timer recorded 1019.4kwh of electricity for the Pizza oven - £122.23 @ 8.38p
- 1 week with the oven timer recorded 911.1kwh of electricity for the Pizza oven - £109.32 @ 8.38p
- Saving for the week is 108.3kwh of electricity for the pizza oven - £12.91 @ 8.38p
- Saving for the year based on the above is 5631.6kwh of electricity for the Pizza oven - £671.32 @ 8.38p
- (8.38p is a preset tariff)
HVAC Replacement
Another service we can offer is to replace existing HVAC units with a new replacement inverter systems. This is a long term energy saving solution as the existing HVAC units need to be replaced but the new inverter system can save up to 75% on energy costs without compromise on delivery.
Replacement Technology Results
- No Loss in capacity
- Standard Products
- Fast installation with reduced costs
- Energy savings
- Reduced maintenance costs
- Reduced down time in retail environments.
- Choice of control solutions to ensure ease of use to suit all applications.
Case Study
- Based on 2 x 12.5 kW cassette units
- Annual running costs for a standard system £3,918.08
- Replacement Technology costs for year 1 £6,315.50*
*This cost includes for the new equipment, installation and the first years running costs (running costs £1,635.50). - 2 year pay back period on installing the replacement technology.
Window Tinting
Window tinting is another service which we can offer, this is something that can reduce the CO2 emissions and reduce your company's Carbon Footprint. The window tinting technology rejects up to 65% of solar energy which greatly reduces the heat input through the glass whilst still allowing natural light into the room. By reducing the heat generated through the windows this in turn reduces the draw on the HVAC system as you no longer have hotter “peak” times throughout the day.
Window Tinting Results:
- Reduces CO2 Emissions
- Saves up to 25% of cooling costs
- Saves up to 5% of total energy costs
- The building will not change in appearance
- Reduces Carbon Footprint
- Positive return on investment
- Minimal disruption during installation
- No special maintenance requirements
Tips for Saving Energy Saving
- Ensure temperatures are set at no more than 19 degrees
- Thermostatic radiators should be left at position 2-3
- Keep doors and windows closed when the heating is on
- Ensure radiators are not blocked with furniture
- Avoid heating unused spaces such as corridors and storerooms
- Update changes in building occupation
- Report any factors which effect comfort levels such as draughty windows and doors
- Switch off lighting in empty rooms
- Use daylight where possible
- Only use required lights
- Ensure outside lights are only used when necessary
- Switch off computers when not required
- Don’t leave equipment on standby mode
- Purchase energy efficiency rated equipment when replacing items
- Don’t leave taps dripping
- Ensure water temperatures are set correctly
John Swires
John Swire & Sons was established in 1816 in Liverpool. They are now global, trading in 5 continents and employing in excess of 125,000 people worldwide.
Their headquarters are in London and operations range from shipping, cold storage, road transport and agriculture, through to property development, aviation, beverages and waste management. Our sister company, Inenco, were retained by John Swire to advise them on the optimum solution to solving their comfort cooling problems. Regulatory, environmental and financial considerations all needed to be taken into account.
THE PROJECT
The design, supply, installation and commissioning of a VRV comfort cooling system.
THE CHALLENGE
- Swires' offices occupy 6 floors of a 1980's building located in central London. Over the years, the internal layout of offices has changed, but the HVAC system has not been updated or adapted to suit resulting in:
- Reduced energy efficiency
- Original design and required comfort levels not being met
- Increased maintenance costs
- Difficulty in sourcing spare parts
THE SOLUTION
FSG supplied and installed a roof mounted VRV heat recovery plant connected to nine indoor heating/cooling systems serving the entire internal space.
The installation included all electrical and control cabling and builder's work governed by an Intelligent Management System controlling energy usage and environmental conditions.
THE IMPLEMENTATION
- A detailed design and specification were compiled to ensure best value was achieved
- A programme of works was agreed before commencement of the contract
- All installation work took place outside normal working hours
THE BENEFITS
- The equipment installed qualified for enhanced capital allowances and 5 years parts and labour guarantees
- Significant savings in running and maintenance costs are being achieved
- A more comfortable working environment through flexibility of temperature control
- The system was installed without disruption to client's staff
- By using only directly employed operatives, FSG were able to control the quality of the workmanship and ensure the contract was delivered on time
